KALEID Gallery presents new works by resident artist Matty Heimgartner in our main gallery for the month of March, 2019. “Things Unsaid” by Matty Heimgartner

“Things Unsaid” is a visual narrative about the anxieties that we suppress by overconsumption of alcohol and drugs. It is a nostalgic tribute to the life that I lived, with watercolor and ink illustrations capturing feelings that I had and scenarios that I saw. Each painting is its own story, but together, they represent a lifestyle. Things Unsaid is a combination of biographical and autobiographical scenarios and situations, with hand-written text inside the paintings to speak the words that my anxious mind could not.

I started taking party drugs at eighteen years old and became dependent on alcohol at nineteen. Anytime that I had to deal with something even remotely stressful, I would drink until I no longer cared, or more so, remembered. Getting kicked…

“Quantum Foundations” by Andrew Irvine Andrew Irvine is a ceramic artist, chemist and professional science educator who is inspired by the intersection of science and art. In “Quantum Foundations”, he showcases his recent experiments with lustre glaze techniques on wall sculpture forms inspired by the mysteries of modern physics. Each piece represents a concept from the development of science in the last century, a journey that has led humanity to the fringes of reality, existence and space-time. The refractive and reflective qualities of lustre glaze colors compliment this inspiration and come from metallic nano-layer deposited on the glaze surface, resulting in vibrant, elusive, otherworldly colors that burst to life when viewed in different light sources. Lifecasting by Luis Jorge Mieses a collection of Lifecasting Sculptures Luis Jorge Mieses was born in Peru, where he grew up, graduated, and worked as an Industrial Engineer. Mieses used to travel into the jungle frequently where he had the opportunity to preserve the animal bodies through taxidermy. Taxidermy became one of his main hobbies. It required preparation, shaping and molding parts for mounting different animals. Through taxidermy he discovered the fascinating world of sculpture. Since moving to California in 2001, Mieses has devoted his time to sculpture and taxidermy. Mieses conducted extensive research and studies on techniques for making molds and sculptures which led him to the human figure. Since then he has devoted his time to Lifecasting; capturing hands, faces, feet and various parts of the human body. Earth, Wind & Fire by Jamila Rufaro and Dotti Cichon Artists’ reception Tuesday July 17th 7pm–10pm (Also happening this evening is TWO BUCK Tuesday at KALEID with art demos, life figure drawing sessions and artists painting live. ) Free admission. Featured artists Jamila Rufaro and Dotti Cichon use elements of nature in their work. Their collaborative piece, Kimono Angel features two thirty-foot rolls of eco-dyed paper held by a weather-rusted angel. Fire is the main protaganist in eco-prints by Dotti depicting “Burning Man” and Jamila’s eco-dyed pieces use old books to portray imaginary marine life. Paintings portray storms and views of Earth from space showing the effects of global warming. There is an interactive sculpture with video depicting the origins of the Cosmos, a copper-leafed textile work that changes with different light and patinas over time, and silks that are not only wall-hangings, but can be worn as scarves.
