KALEID Gallery is proud to present:
Helen: Queen of the Flies Julie Barrett solo exhibition
Artist reception: Friday, March 1st 5pm–9pm
part of First Fridays ArtWalk SJ
Carl is in love with his beautiful, young patient Helen. Although she succumbs to her illness and dies, he still tries to keep her alive.through the layers of “reality” he has layered in his own reality. She exists between the planes of the here and the gone; he can’t tell the difference except for the crackles and blasts of his brain breaking…breaking through to her. Sometimes their connection is clear. She is alive with him, she is his – laughing and seemingly interacting with him. Then the crackling happens and he loses her; she can’t hear him anymore. She’s decaying, he’s trying desperately to stop that. He can’t control decay any more than he can control his disgusting love for a dead girl. He finally realizes that the only way he can truly be with her is to become one of the flies, feeding off her slowly decaying body.
Carl Tanzler, or known as the Count Carl von Cosel (February 8, 1877 – July 3, 1952), was a German-born radiology technologist at the Marine-Hospital Service in Key West, Florida. He developed an obsession for a young Cuban-American tuberculosis patient Elena “Helen” Milagro de Hoyos (July 31, 1909 – October 25, 1931) that carried on well after her death. In 1933, almost two years after her death, Tanzler removed Hoyos’ body from its tomb, and lived with the corpse at his home for seven years until its discovery by Hoyos’ relatives and authorities in 1940. “Neither Artificial nor Intelligent: Artists Working with Algorithms
Panel discussion: Friday, February 23rd 7pm–9pm. Free admission
Featuring Artists: Julie Meridian, James Morgan, and Steve Cooley
Moderator: Cherri Lakey
KALEID Gallery is proud to host this panel with three talented artists who are using various AI tools in their artistic practice while navigating all the ethical and creative dilemmas that arise with it. With all the controversy around AI collaborative / generated art, we’re looking forward to hearing from these avant-garde artists that are exploring the possibilities of a positive outcome for artists and creatives in this as-of-yet undefined new territory.
Julie Meridian:
Julie Meridian captures the essence of people and places through representational art with impressionist details. She has extensive experience humanizing technology through UX design and has been active in the Silicon Valley arts community since 2014. “Terraforming the Uncanny Valley” exhibit featuring paintings by Julie Meridian in collaboration with Berlin-based tech artist Lucidbeaming is currently on view at KALEID Gallery.
You can visit her website at www.juliemeridian.com/
James Morgan:
James Morgan is an artist, educator and narcissist. As an artist he is interested in how theory and meaning intersect with the work, his interest in the way that people communicate and work with and around the artwork has led him into the game space and virtual environments. As a collaborative artist he finds Artificial Intelligence to be a way to expand his work into new areas that he has little or no expertise.
You can hear his album at https://bit.ly/ujm-frank
Steve Cooley:
Steve Cooley has been active in the south bay arts community for about 20 years. He is a former president and current advisory board member of Works/San José. He’s also in a cool live techno music band called Haptic Synapses. Cooley has worked in tech jobs since 1997.
You can find his art and music here: http://sc-fa.com
Moderator Cherri Lakey:
Cherri Lakey and partner Brian Eder are the owners and curators of ANNO DOMINI // the second coming of Art & Design, KALEID Gallery, and a bunch of other passion projects that give artists opportunities to be their authentic selves and share their extraordinary art with a wider public audience. She is intensely interested in the history and power of Art and Imagination juxtaposed with the challenges of the human condition in modern times. Additionally, Lakey is a contributing writer at KQED Arts & Culture.

KALEID Gallery is proud to present:
“Terraforming the Uncanny Valley” a series of paintings from a collaboration between painter Julie Meridian (San Jose) and tech artist Lucidbeaming (Berlin).
Opening reception: Friday February 2nd 5pm–9pm
part of the First Fridays ArtWalk SJ
Free admission & all ages.
Lucidbeaming’s algorithmic remixing of historical landscapes is reimagined in paintings by Julie Meridian. His algorithmic experimentation with synthetic terrain combined with her eye for bringing realistic detail back in to virtual imagery yields a new kind of landscape. From a painting tradition that celebrated unspoiled nature to remixes made real through human interpretation, the end result is a vision that hints at a future when the environment re-forms after humanity’s presence…and the marks it has left with technology.
Both artists are deeply grounded in both traditional and digital art practices. They are pursuing ethical AI experimentation to better understand the nature of what can emerge.

Gods Like Us Jemal Diamond solo exhibition
Artist’s reception: First Friday November 3rd 5pm–9pm.

“GODS LIKE US” is a collection of acrylic paintings spanning two years of work by artist Jemal Diamond. An experiment in the confining shape of the circle – an undoubtedly profound and universally significant shape, the pieces cast a spotlight on unique clusters of contrasting and complementary shapes. Both mechanical and organic, masculine and feminine, abstract and representational, there lies embedded intentional dichotomies to create a playground of visual cues and possible meaning.
All titles for works in this collection are given by viewers like you, including “Gods like us” title by Anna M.

Jemal Diamond is a south Bay Area-based artist and designer. His work is playful, improvisational, and interactive. He works from his studio at Visual Philosophy, is member artist of Works San José, and resident artist at KALEID gallery.

Unification of The Collective Intuition
Jonathan Perea solo exhibition
“I am compelled to create, I see faces everywhere and fractal holograms, and in my art there exists the programming of a new metaphor that promotes healing, balance and equilibrium. The holographic, energetic, eternal patterns in my art resonate in nature, and the source within each of us, freeing the soul to create its own path. I strive to conceive connections that bind our reality to one. Aho!”
We are more than our physical body. The old thinking of limitation and restriction has expired. Spirituality and science demonstrate profoundly that we are multidimensional, non-local, cosmically energetic, and deathless.
We all carry a potentiality that is infinite, self healing and mathematically fractal by design. Because we are slowly waking up to who we really are, anything is possible because we are in a dream.
Through epigenetics, psychoneuroimmunology, nature, and the collective human biome – as above, so below – we become aware and step into self-realization.
All belief systems are buffers. The truth is hidden in plain sight. Our breath is the key, and our attention is the lock. So, breathe to open your divine wisdom.
About the Artist:
Jonathan Perea is a professional artist working in the Bay Area since 2011. He has shown his work through exhibitions, and collaborations at galleries and museums such as KALEID Gallery, Triton Museum, Works Gallery, and Fuse Underground. What would an artist create if they felt no need to seek approval or to extract profit–but only the desire to express joy and amusement? Come and see Kyle Harter’s answer to this question in Be Weird, Have Fun, their newest show of paintings, prints, blankets, tapestries, and apparel. Each piece created for fun, and fun alone. Don’t Panic Matty Heimgartner Solo Exhibition
Opening reception: First Friday, May 5th 5pm–9pm
Part of the South FIRST FRIDAYS ArtWalk SJ in SoFA District.
Free admission and all ages.
My forehead, palms, and pits are sweaty, but I’m so cold that I’m shaking. It’s hard to breathe. My vision is narrow with the center most saturated then the outer fading to a blur. My heart beats against my rib cage as if it is trying to break out of its prison. I feel like I am falling, but I’m pretty sure I am standing. My thoughts race so fast that I can’t process a single one. I’m confused. I’m afraid. And I’m certain this is going to be my demise.
You’re having a panic attack.
But they keep happening.
You have panic disorder.
I had my first panic attack when I was nineteen years old and my second not long after the first. I was certain I was having a heart attack and it took several x-rays from different doctors before I believed otherwise. I met with a therapist who explained the science behind the attacks. The amygdala nerves in my brain send distress signals to my hypothalamus—an alarm system within my body—and then my body exudes sensations of being in danger. My anxious mind believes it. When in danger, some kick into fight mode, others flight. I freeze.
I spent my twenties trying to escape my own mind by drowning it with substances from liquor stores and back alleys, but my mind was always right back with me the next morning.
Feel the fear, do it anyway.
In sobriety, I have sought the core roots of my panic attacks. Uncertainty. Feelings of not being in control. Excessive worry. Paranoia. Some of these root problems are more manageable than others, but what has helped me through my panic most of all is creative expression. Writing, sculpting, and painting. Creating art gets me out of my head and into the work. This series is less about coherence between the pieces and more about letting go of control, paranoia, and perfectionism.
The best advice I ever received about panic attacks—something I still practice until this day—came from a panic disorder support group leader whom I met when I was nineteen: If you were making a sandwich when the attack started, finish making the sandwich and show your mind you’re not in danger.

KALEID Gallery is proud to present:
The Age of Enlightenment David V. Mejia solo exhibition
We owe much to the thinkers and innovators of the Enlightenment period. Explorers, inventors, mathematicians, scientists, politicians, philosophers, and writers changed people’s lives, how they see the world, challenging the thousand-year-old Medieval authority. This was the dawn of our modern world. My art show explores some of the key figures like Isaac Newton, John Locke, Voltaire, and others who gave us concepts we take for granted today, such as gravity, representational government, and Liberty. I’ve pulled together my interest in Western history and philosophy, with a blend of art styles from early European paintings and political cartoons, modern comics, caricature art, and watercolors. This is my labor of love I’ve devoted the past year to. I hope you enjoy it and come away with a greater interest and fascination with our shared modern cultural beginnings.
About the Artist:
David Mejia is a San Jose artist who has done art shows and events throughout the Bay Area and Northern California. His style varies between realism, abstract, and cartoon. He works in mixed media, primarily watercolor with ink, pencil, and acrylic.
“I’m a firm believer in the use of art as a tool to bridge the gap between the subjective and the objective.“ ~David Mejia
