Looking through the Glass paintings by Sara Tomasello

Through her paintings, Sara Tomasello builds on themes of intimacy and the unity of opposites. Her characters are symbols for the light and dark aspects of human nature. Using a vibrant color palette and inspired by universal mythological themes, Sara portrays the emotional impact of the world she sees and experiences it in her acrylic paintings. There is a story behind each piece and it begins; Once upon time. Viewers are invited to look through the glass that Sara views the world and reflect on your own experiences of the world.

Musings From the Wasteland
by Michelle Waters

The paintings in this series by Bay Area artist Michelle Waters are influenced by the nightmarish imagery of Hieronymus Bosch, Edward Abbey's writings and her work as a wildlife rehabilitator and environmental activist. Her art deconstructs the assumption of human superiority by showing what might transpire if animals took control over the fate of the planet. Animals demolishing the Glen Canyon Dam and wildlife laying waste to a bulldozer are some of the characters who populate her paintings.

The Strip by Katie C. Gutierrez

Jessica Beerli (1974-2011), a talented young artist who died in a tragic accident, left behind a provoking body of work that shows the potential of a truly talented young woman pursing her art.

Some of that work has been displayed here in a show that is as much a work in progress as the artist was herself. In addition to the finished work, some of the paintings on display are clearly early drafts, experiments in color and style that were leading Jessica toward her own distinct perspective. As she worked, she learned and this show is an unusual opportunity to see the progression of art while glimpsing its final form. Jessica planned to showcase her paintings at KALEID Gallery in February 2011. To honor her life, this comprehensive show has been organized by family, friends and the gallery.

"The purpose is not to sadden or shock you, but more to call attention to those who have little in their lives to smile about, and to make us realize how fortunate we are in spite of our daily struggles."

"Through these portraits I am attempting to create a space in the viewer and myself where a discussion for the potentiality of peace may take shape, root and thrive. A dialogue made possible by the universally powerful, ancient and deeply symbolic language, of painting."  ~ Jessica Beerli

Join us for our Featured Exhibits by Dotti Cichon and Kathleen Wolf at KALEID for the month of March.

Dotti Cichon: The Grandeur of the Commonplace: Impressions of Europe two bodies of photographic work from a recent trip to Europe.

The Grandeur of the Commonplace explores the incredible beauty of ordinary places such as train stations, shopping malls, shops and stairways in panoramic photographs that exaggerate perspective by having forced the camera to do things it was not meant to do. Impressions of Europe, work done in Paris and Les Andelys in France is an homage to the impressionist painters who attempted to capture "impressions" and not just copy reality which is something that, by definition, is a challenge to emulate as a photographer.

Kathleen Wolf: Almost Edible

This exhibition is comprised of several approaches to food painting: the earliest works represent visual recipes, the second is comprised of viewing food from multiple viewpoints or having it disappear off over the horizon, creating a different type of visual movement. The third, and most recent work invites the viewer to participate in the purchase of food from places they are familar with, an Ice Cream Parlor, Bakery, Deli, etc.

Insomnia. Lost San Jose Nights by photographer Josh Marcotte
Street lamps wash the pavement in yellow, and the city glows like the sun never set. Years of closing shifts and no car means sleep comes late, if at all. The sidewalk is empty and it will be hours before you get home. Your mind is racing and music drowns everything out. You remember stories from your family, your history class and your friends, stories about where you are and you think, "I should take a picture of this, all of this."

Artists' Reception: 7pm - 10pm
Live music and light refreshments
Free and open to the public

First Friday Oct. 1st Featured Exhibtions

KALEID Gallery presents new solo exhibitions by Mariana Barnes and John Eric Paulson on Friday, October 1st, 7-9pm.

MarianaBarnes-StainglassBlueGreen.jpg

Ancient Art, Modern Twist by Mariana Barnes.
Mosaics have been used in artwork around the world for thousands of years. Mariana Barnes has adapted this ancient art form into her mosaic-like style of painting. She gathers inspiration for her work from the art and symbols of past and present civilizations, combined with the patterns she sees in nature and everyday objects. She uses geometric and nonlinear designs, complementing them with iridescent tones and luminescent colors.

The process of her art is meditative. She strives to make art that is calming and peaceful and art that speaks with candor and passion. Her work is intended to be healing -to spark a sense of well being in the viewer.

About the artist: Mariana Barnes is a self taught artist who has been painting for over 20 years. Her many interests such as science, music and writing have also played important roles in her life, and each finds a way into her art.

Originally from Argentina, she has been exposed to a sophisticated Latin American culture, where art and music are highly regarded and are a normal part of everyday life. All of the color and energy of her Latin American background nourish the paintings she creates.

Paulson_KALEID.jpg
