Find Your Muse at the Eclectic & Quirky TWO BUCK Tuesday this Tuesday, July 20th, 7-10pm.

A bodypainter creates timely work about our relationship to oceans, A production company stays in San Jose instead of moving to LA, A performer dances for peace, and a local professor rediscovers artistic inspiration at KALEID Gallery's monthly Two Buck Tuesday event.

TWO BUCK Tuesdays is an inspired event hosted by a crew of very dedicated artists at KALEID Gallery on the Third Tuesday of the month. Artists and audience alike are invited to attend, contribute and share in this unique event all free of charge.

The Two Buck Tuesday Crew organizes artistic, creative speakers, live demos, performances and live music jammed into three hours for a hyper shot of inspiration that you'll carry with you all month long until the next one.

"One thing all these speakers and performers have in common is passion and inspiration. They've all found their muse and want to share it," says July curator Trina Merry.

On July 20th from 7-10pm the public can see and speak with many amazing artists, performers and musicians and purchase $2 art (starting at noon.)

The speaker series has garnered a cult following. Similar to the idea of TED Talks, each speaker gets 10 minutes (or less) to speak and answer questions.

This month's speaker series line-up includes:

Sandy Sanjurjo will do a walk-through talk about her feature "SeaSkin" Exhibition at KALEID Gallery.

"SeaSkin was born from the notion that we are, as humans, directly connected with our environment. We are a part of the air we breathe, the earth we derive nourishment from and tread on, the water we play in and consume," says Sanjuro.

"Initially we wanted to donate to Oceana for their 'Save the Sharks' project, but of course, with the devastation in the gulf it only makes sense for the money to go towards the clean-up effort. We will leave it in Oceana's capable hands to determine where they can best use the funds. The message of this show rings even more true now, that we are physically connected with the health of our planet, and this terrible oil slick will harm us in ways we cannot yet predict. It will leave a very deep scar on our skin."

Kevin Powers, local professor, will talk about Inspiration, how it relates to the art making process, and tips on getting re-inspired.

Element 151 Films, a San Jose-based production company, will screen some of their music videos & share why they're here instead of LA.

Performance by Khalilah Ramirez who will share her "Dance of Peace". "The purpose of the Dance of Peace is to help foster peace in people's hearts. It makes people smile. It makes dogs bark. It gets people talking to each other. It turns the conversation towards peace. It is fun and silly. It takes people's minds away from their everyday worries," says Kalilah Ramirez.

Daniel Gaines Photography will help artists whip their websites into shape by shooting web-ready jpgs of artwork for only $2. Please limit to 5 works that are 36"x48" or smaller. http://danielgainescreative.com

TWO BUCK TUESDAY, June 15th 2010 6:30-9pm

$2 Art Sale and Quirky Speaker Series

This month at Two Buck Tuesday- a range of people who spend more time than you do with animals. In that sentence I'm counting "found objects" as an animal. ~this month's curator Kate Stewart

David Mejia was born and raised in San Jose, California and he loves to draw and make comic books. He works at the Martin Luther King Library and occasionally has the job of the library's mascot Conroy the Curious Cougar. David has created most of the art work for the library featuring Conroy (he also proposed to his wife in the Cougar suit.) You can see David's art work on view at KALEID Gallery.

Stephanie Bailey is a stiltwalker, ballet dancer, puppeteer and flautist. She travels the world as a museum photographer. Last summer, she spent two months at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum in Washington DC photographing their insects and prehistoric vegetation (she was also allowed to touch dinosaur bones!) Stephanie will demonstrate the process she uses to photograph tiny things, and show off the bugs the Smithsonian let her keep.

Zack Belanger is a sculptor in wood, glass, metal and found objects recently transplanted from Oakland to San Jose. His recent passion is making jewelry out of found objects. Watch his majesty.

Sandy Sanjurjo talks about Seaskin, her upcoming KALEID feature exhibit benefiting the world's oceans.

Live drawing featuring Ashley Laidlaw and Justin Devine, Keith Bunnell throwing ceramics, and Arturo Rangel on the mic!

TWO BUCK Tuesdays is an all day $2 art sale and evening quirky speaker series that happens on the 3rd Tuesday of the month.

Efflorescence is a series of lumen prints by Shannon Amidon
inspired by her interest in blending artistic renderings of nature and
old world photographic techniques. Camera-less images are created by
exposing botanical specimens and photographic paper to varying levels of
sunlight, time, and temperature, creating unique and ethereal images
that transcend the specimens' natural color, shape, and form.

A companion ambient sound installation by Compartment organically
interprets pieces of Shannon Amidon's Efflorescence series
resulting in musical vignettes that are sometimes alarming, sometimes
whimsical. Compartment will be present opening night performing a live

Preconscious a photographic exhibition by Centa Schumacher.
This work explores what is just beneath our awareness using the body as

non-existent.

Artists' Reception: Friday May 7th, 7pm - 9pm

WANDA new paintings by Kurtis Rykovich

Everyday I am confronted or find myself thinking about a war so intense that it cannot be escaped, and in some way has touched us all. This war has a front line in every country and can take root in any neighborhood. In theory it is probably the least judgmental being or thing I can think of, since it shows no signs of discrimination. If this war leaves any survivors they always come out scarred but probably have never felt such a moment of empowerment. These survivors can finally breath and know that they have accomplished something that can sometimes be a miracle, they have survived Breast Cancer.

This show is a tribute to these survivors and casualties. Each piece represents a battle or search for a cure. Weather it be a green tonic, shark cartilage, or the ultimate warrior known as Chemotherapy. All of these represent weapons and hope that a future is not far in the distance.

I hope that when these paintings are viewed that they are not blunt about the disease but show a beauty and respect for those that might be going or have gone through this war. This collection was a direct result of my encounter with this war when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. I remember how she was constantly trying to win the war and search for a solution, perhaps the most difficult part of this battle was she no longer felt like the beautiful women that she once was. I hope that these pieces help her to understand that she was always beautiful, this disease did not take away her femininity but did highlight her strength.

dedicated to WANDA (1952 - 2001)

Speaking Line stories about people and their places by Kate Saturday

When we look at something, we take in its identity at a glance. We know immediately if it is a chair, a tree, a president, a wind, a story, or a hope. On further examination we can differentiate more precisely; the chair is a recliner or a picnic bench, the tree an oak sapling or a hundred-year-old giant sequoia. Deep familiarity allows us to see the object as itself, shaped by its history, unlike any other object in the world. A wrinkle is the face's memory of an expression. A scar is a historic marker. The story of our lives is how we differ from the general. Until we know someone that well, we cannot love them.

Kate Saturday is an artist, musician, and cartoonist living in San Jose. In Speaking Line, she traces the contours of her subjects lives. The resulting portraits are monstrous and jewel-like, precious and absurd. The situations are mundane, but unmistakably specific. Every line speaks volumes, and Saturday translates fluently.

A space will be available for drawing, writing, or reflecting, because a story needs a reader to give it voice.

TWO BUCK Tuesday, curated by Matthew Bailey Seigel

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

family friendly free for all ages

$2 ART SALE starts @12pm

FUN TALKS start @7pm featuring:

Chef Patti Searle is a professional chef, caterer, and owner of Thrivin' Edibles, a 100% vegan food enterprise. Raw vegan food is her passion, both as a creator and a consumer and she will be giving a talk called, "Super Foods? How about Foods that are Super?" She'll include hints on how to prepare these everyday GIANTS in the fruit and vegetable world. Arrive on time at Two Buck Tuesday as Patti will get the evening started at 7pm. Oh, and she is bringing samples of her world-famous HuuRaw chips!
thrivinedibles.com

Gary Coleman, oil and pastel painter, will explore artistic priorities. LIKE: Does painting to sell have to mean selling out? If it does (just a little), does the artist hoard his/her own work? Is it selling out to paint for recognition and respect? Is fun more fun than suffering? Is it necessary to continue to "build a body of work", or is it OK to move on to something else when the body seems to be getting old? Gary will show some of his own work to illustrate his own decisions. He is over 70 years old, and so you should listen to and respect his wisdom.
 garycolemanartist.com

Lisa Fisher-Mejia has been performing bellydance in the Bay Area for the past 5 years. She has also performed in Seattle and Los Angeles. She sews a lot of her own costumes. She likes to experiment with a fusion of dance forms, including gothic, tribal, East Indian, and Burlesque. At KALEID, she'll be performing the standard Cabaret style bellydance taught to her by her Mother (who was a bellydancer in the 1970s).
 myspace.com/staribun

SKETCH ARTISTS 6-10pm featuring:

Gary Coleman (read above)

M.P. Nothing, you may know him as Mo from barefoot coffee, now you will also know him for his graffiti & graphic novel inspired art, and perhaps his friend Jeff will attend as well.

Emonic's artwork has been featured all throughout the west coast in various shows and events. He currently works as freelance illustrator in addition to working on his own personal projects. You can see his work at www.emonic.net

Chemix is relatively new to the art world; while he has focused mostly on collaborating on projects and managing his brother Emonic for the last 3 1/2 years, he has only recently started his foray in actively creating work and hopes to expand and learn along the way.

Carol Ponsaran is an artist and teacher. carolponsaran.com

Mahoney Perkins draws zines, prints and publishes. jwlk.com

Chuck Hepburn, descended from Mary, Queen of Scots, and yes, related to (and met) Katherine Hepburn. He was physicist on the Mars lander mission. And he opened for Beck in Las Vegas. However for us, he will be modeling for the sketch artists, dressed as a cowboy, playing guitar! as he too is a professional model!

Also ALL artists are invited to bring their art supplies, and take a place at the sketch table! Space is first come first serve.

LIVE MUSIC @9pm featuring:

Matt Geddes solo live blues act www.musicalcarrion.com

FOOD, COFFEE & CERAMICS featuring:

Chef Patti is bringing samples of her world-famous HuuRaw chips!

Red Berry Coffee Bar, artisan roasted, single origin coffees, are on location to serve and explain their selection and vision. redberrycoffeebar.com

Keith Bunnell will demonstrate his ceramics all evening in front of KALEID. He has been throwing for almost 5 years now and is currently going to Foothill college to get his major in art. He mostly does Raku firing but he has been experimenting with Soda firing as well. twitter.com/ithrowthings

Transfiguration is essentially the art of changing the properties of an object. In this case it refers to the changing of garbage into art.
This series is made entirely from rescued materials. The core is made of Styrofoam collected from shipping packages, friends and dumpsters. Sandi then applies a combination of old paint clothes, junk mail, phone books --- basically anything with natural fibers headed for the trash. Dipping these flexible materials in non-toxic glue gives them strength to hold interesting shapes. Finally, the piece is finished with "Aqua Brand" textures and paint which are non-toxic. The result is an environmentally friendly piece of art.

art by Mark Damrel

Relative Matter is a series of paintings by Mark Damrel inspired by the hardships he encountered on his journey into fatherhood. "Years went by with little to no hope. I started to get used to the fact that I would never have a family, and then it happened."
In groupings of mixed media paintings on wood and paper, he explores the themes of childhood memories, despair, hope and joy.

Meet the artists at the opening reception on Friday, February 5th, 7-9pm, featuring live music by INFM, and Tyler Boyd.

This reception is part of the South First Fridays art walk and is free and open to the public.

In addition to the feature exhibitions, peruse the art of 60 regional artists work in the gallery.

Gallery Hours:
Tuesday - Friday, Noon - 7pm
Saturday, Noon - 5pm

KALEID Gallery
88 South Fourth Street
Downtown San Jose
http://www.KALEIDgallery.com
408-947-1785

This edition of TWO BUCK TUESDAY is curated by Lacey Bryant.

January 19th 6-10 pm Free admission

Featuring our Quirky Speaker Series:

Drew Clark: A charismatic artist who will expound upon the finer points of dressing with panache and how it's totally worth the discomfort involved.

Brian Gundy: The owner of For Goodness Snakes will discuss how his passion for animals helped to build his business. Brian has been a local professional snake breeder for over 20 years. His love for people and education now finds him sharing his cold blooded friends at schools, birthday parties and company events.

Gary Parker: After over 40 years of experience, Gary will teach us the merit of being a stupid photographer-that is, not playing by the rules and still getting great shots!

Also Featuring:

A Grand and Unusual Puppet show by Dax
Dax's show is original songs on accordion and wine glasses in an american folk style, paired with three short puppetry pieces that unfold from three plywood suitcases. The theme of the puppet shows is of making something out of nothing, and are on the more experimental side of the craft. He has been performing shows on the west coast since 2001 with Corpus Callosum. From 2007-2008 he performed puppetry with the renowned Chicago Blair Thomas & Co. Chamber Puppet Theater.

"As with his songs, there is no showmanship, legerdemain, pretense or fanfare in the presentation of this non-traditional puppetry. On stage, Dax has a deceptively casual manner - meanwhile, glowing stars pop out of suitcases of their own accord, and apparitions rise out of heaps of cardboard and collapse just as quickly. Nothing is hidden in the straight-forward construction of the puppets and apparatuses, and yet each piece unfolds a moment of magic that is as moving as it is direct. These shows cleverly present the fascination that has been lost to us since childhood, though you wouldn't imagine how simply it was achieved."

Blair Thomas - Artistic Director of Blair Thomas & Co. Chamber Puppet Theater, founder of Redmoon Theater, Chicago, IL.

Music by DJ Coco

Life Modeling for the purposes of sketching by the Gothic Lolitas of San Jose

The unveiling of A Mystery New Animated Short Film by Matthew Seigel and Pellet

Feautured Live Sketch Artists:

Kate Stewart
T.h. Pug
John Kurtyaka
Al Preciado
Celeste Young

All artists are invited to bring their art supplies and take a place at the sketch table! Space is first come first serve.

Free cupcakes and snacks, coffee by Red Berry Coffee Bar!

And of course, $2 art for sale all day long!
