TWO BUCK Tuesday, curated by Matthew Bailey Seigel

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

family friendly free for all ages

$2 ART SALE starts @12pm

FUN TALKS start @7pm featuring:

Chef Patti Searle is a professional chef, caterer, and owner of Thrivin' Edibles, a 100% vegan food enterprise. Raw vegan food is her passion, both as a creator and a consumer and she will be giving a talk called, "Super Foods? How about Foods that are Super?" She'll include hints on how to prepare these everyday GIANTS in the fruit and vegetable world. Arrive on time at Two Buck Tuesday as Patti will get the evening started at 7pm. Oh, and she is bringing samples of her world-famous HuuRaw chips!
thrivinedibles.com

Gary Coleman, oil and pastel painter, will explore artistic priorities. LIKE: Does painting to sell have to mean selling out? If it does (just a little), does the artist hoard his/her own work? Is it selling out to paint for recognition and respect? Is fun more fun than suffering? Is it necessary to continue to "build a body of work", or is it OK to move on to something else when the body seems to be getting old? Gary will show some of his own work to illustrate his own decisions. He is over 70 years old, and so you should listen to and respect his wisdom.
 garycolemanartist.com

Lisa Fisher-Mejia has been performing bellydance in the Bay Area for the past 5 years. She has also performed in Seattle and Los Angeles. She sews a lot of her own costumes. She likes to experiment with a fusion of dance forms, including gothic, tribal, East Indian, and Burlesque. At KALEID, she'll be performing the standard Cabaret style bellydance taught to her by her Mother (who was a bellydancer in the 1970s).
 myspace.com/staribun

SKETCH ARTISTS 6-10pm featuring:

Gary Coleman (read above)

M.P. Nothing, you may know him as Mo from barefoot coffee, now you will also know him for his graffiti & graphic novel inspired art, and perhaps his friend Jeff will attend as well.

Emonic's artwork has been featured all throughout the west coast in various shows and events. He currently works as freelance illustrator in addition to working on his own personal projects. You can see his work at www.emonic.net

Chemix is relatively new to the art world; while he has focused mostly on collaborating on projects and managing his brother Emonic for the last 3 1/2 years, he has only recently started his foray in actively creating work and hopes to expand and learn along the way.

Carol Ponsaran is an artist and teacher. carolponsaran.com

Mahoney Perkins draws zines, prints and publishes. jwlk.com

Chuck Hepburn, descended from Mary, Queen of Scots, and yes, related to (and met) Katherine Hepburn. He was physicist on the Mars lander mission. And he opened for Beck in Las Vegas. However for us, he will be modeling for the sketch artists, dressed as a cowboy, playing guitar! as he too is a professional model!

Also ALL artists are invited to bring their art supplies, and take a place at the sketch table! Space is first come first serve.

LIVE MUSIC @9pm featuring:

Matt Geddes solo live blues act www.musicalcarrion.com

FOOD, COFFEE & CERAMICS featuring:

Chef Patti is bringing samples of her world-famous HuuRaw chips!

Red Berry Coffee Bar, artisan roasted, single origin coffees, are on location to serve and explain their selection and vision. redberrycoffeebar.com

Keith Bunnell will demonstrate his ceramics all evening in front of KALEID. He has been throwing for almost 5 years now and is currently going to Foothill college to get his major in art. He mostly does Raku firing but he has been experimenting with Soda firing as well. twitter.com/ithrowthings

Transfiguration is essentially the art of changing the properties of an object. In this case it refers to the changing of garbage into art.
This series is made entirely from rescued materials. The core is made of Styrofoam collected from shipping packages, friends and dumpsters. Sandi then applies a combination of old paint clothes, junk mail, phone books --- basically anything with natural fibers headed for the trash. Dipping these flexible materials in non-toxic glue gives them strength to hold interesting shapes. Finally, the piece is finished with "Aqua Brand" textures and paint which are non-toxic. The result is an environmentally friendly piece of art.

art by Mark Damrel

Relative Matter is a series of paintings by Mark Damrel inspired by the hardships he encountered on his journey into fatherhood. "Years went by with little to no hope. I started to get used to the fact that I would never have a family, and then it happened."
In groupings of mixed media paintings on wood and paper, he explores the themes of childhood memories, despair, hope and joy.

Meet the artists at the opening reception on Friday, February 5th, 7-9pm, featuring live music by INFM, and Tyler Boyd.

This reception is part of the South First Fridays art walk and is free and open to the public.

In addition to the feature exhibitions, peruse the art of 60 regional artists work in the gallery.

Gallery Hours:
Tuesday - Friday, Noon - 7pm
Saturday, Noon - 5pm

KALEID Gallery
88 South Fourth Street
Downtown San Jose
http://www.KALEIDgallery.com
408-947-1785

This edition of TWO BUCK TUESDAY is curated by Lacey Bryant.

January 19th 6-10 pm Free admission

Featuring our Quirky Speaker Series:

Drew Clark: A charismatic artist who will expound upon the finer points of dressing with panache and how it's totally worth the discomfort involved.

Brian Gundy: The owner of For Goodness Snakes will discuss how his passion for animals helped to build his business. Brian has been a local professional snake breeder for over 20 years. His love for people and education now finds him sharing his cold blooded friends at schools, birthday parties and company events.

Gary Parker: After over 40 years of experience, Gary will teach us the merit of being a stupid photographer-that is, not playing by the rules and still getting great shots!

Also Featuring:

A Grand and Unusual Puppet show by Dax
Dax's show is original songs on accordion and wine glasses in an american folk style, paired with three short puppetry pieces that unfold from three plywood suitcases. The theme of the puppet shows is of making something out of nothing, and are on the more experimental side of the craft. He has been performing shows on the west coast since 2001 with Corpus Callosum. From 2007-2008 he performed puppetry with the renowned Chicago Blair Thomas & Co. Chamber Puppet Theater.

"As with his songs, there is no showmanship, legerdemain, pretense or fanfare in the presentation of this non-traditional puppetry. On stage, Dax has a deceptively casual manner - meanwhile, glowing stars pop out of suitcases of their own accord, and apparitions rise out of heaps of cardboard and collapse just as quickly. Nothing is hidden in the straight-forward construction of the puppets and apparatuses, and yet each piece unfolds a moment of magic that is as moving as it is direct. These shows cleverly present the fascination that has been lost to us since childhood, though you wouldn't imagine how simply it was achieved."

Blair Thomas - Artistic Director of Blair Thomas & Co. Chamber Puppet Theater, founder of Redmoon Theater, Chicago, IL.

Music by DJ Coco

Life Modeling for the purposes of sketching by the Gothic Lolitas of San Jose

The unveiling of A Mystery New Animated Short Film by Matthew Seigel and Pellet

Feautured Live Sketch Artists:

Kate Stewart
T.h. Pug
John Kurtyaka
Al Preciado
Celeste Young

All artists are invited to bring their art supplies and take a place at the sketch table! Space is first come first serve.

Free cupcakes and snacks, coffee by Red Berry Coffee Bar!

KALEID Gallery presents the featured exhibitions Fragile Things new paintings by Lacey Bryant, and Carnival of Souls assemblages by Jen Renzel for the month of November.

Fragile Things by Lacey Bryant
Lacey has always been fascinated at how so many fragile things are able to exist in our chaotic, messy world. "Tiny, delicate things often seem to thrive in the most hostile environments. Fragility makes things precious to us, things are more beautiful because they will not last. So many things are fragile when you stop to think about it. Insect wings, shells, glass, children, hearts, dreams, the list is endless. On the surface, vulnerability seems to unite these things but the deeper thing that all of these fragile things have in common is a hidden strength. An egg shell is easily broken, but the shape of an egg is such that it can support a massive amount of weight for it's size and thickness, protecting it's delicate contents. An insect may be crushed without a thought but can easily survive a fall that would kill a human being, not to mention the strength of their numbers. Children are amazingly resilient and can survive the most horrible of circumstances. It is the balance between weak and strong and the often contradictory duality of things that interests me. "

Carnival of Lost Souls by Jen Renzel
Little sideshow oddities, dark dreams, and mystical beings. Broken dolls, old toys, antique hardware, collaged images, and imagination are the ingredients for these shadow boxes. "The broken down treasure at the bottom of a moldy box can be the cornerstone of a new creation. In fact, that's often how the idea for a piece starts -- with one broken doll, toy, or image that sparks the imagination. The rest is a continual trial and error process of finding which pieces fit together, then figuring out how to connect them, which can be challenging when working with oftentimes crumbling, frail and damaged materials and parts. Something tells me when a piece is finished. Some pieces come together quickly, and some take forever and are a struggle. In either case, I can lose hours and hours in the workshop, and the results sometimes surprise even me."

KALEID Gallery presents the featured exhibitions Anxiety by Julie Bilyeu, and From the Rubble by Drew Clark for the month of October.

Anxiety new drawings by Julie Bilyeu
Julie’s love for art has helped her cope with a severe anxiety disorder. Drawing has become a necessity for her and she is currently inspired by these anxieties and panic attacks which manifests as dark and dramatic charcoal drawings of her experiences.

From the Rubble new paintings by Drew Clark
Drawings on cave walls and old temples have always depicted the end of the world and the collapse of civilization. The Modern Age is no different; visions of recession, biblical apocalypse, climate change and environmental destruction by industry. These new paintings explore the symbolism of the End Times.

KALEID Gallery presents:

89.7 FM KFJC 50th Anniversary Art Show: BLOWING MINDS SINCE 1959

A retrospective of the Art & Culture of KFJC including works from KFJC’s 50th Anniversary Art & Logo Contest and a Silent Auction of DJ art.

Since its inception KFJC has challenged the Bay Area’s radio waves. 2009 marks fifty years of operation for KFJC, and naturally we wanted to show our support to our listenership. Our volunteer staff pushed beyond its' alternative and eclectic programming by hosting a 50th Anniversary Art & Logo Contest this summer.

Every year we hand select different artists to create our Artist T Shirt and Girlie Shirt designs that become our gifts during our fundraiser season. The contest provided an opportunity to connect our listeners with another side of KFJC that they have become familiar with through their support. The contest was open to the public and included three submission categories: mixed media, artist t-shirt, & logo.

We are proud of all the submissions that arrived, many of which were from listeners online, including international submissions from Australia and New Zealand.

Our grand prize winners received cash prizes of $250 to First Place winner, Andrew Goldfarb, who contributed a colorful piece titled “Wave of the Future”

$150 awarded to Rosalind Schell won Second Place with her “Path Logo” pulling from the simple aesthetic that KFJC has used in it’s past logos.

And $100 to Third Place winner, Gordon De Los Santos for his work “KFJC T Shirt”

These winning art works will be exhibited along side past artist contributions. Previous KFJC themed works from Niagara, Sunny Buick, Arik Roper, Emek, Strk3, Mike King, Webster Colcord, Plastic Crimewave, Mike Zorn, Mike Davis, Frances Marin, Chris Reccardi, Robert Williams, and GAMA-GO! will be featured. KFJC DJs will be participating in a Silent Auction of unique works during the opening night to benefit KFJC.

Artists' Reception: First Friday September 4th, 7-9pm
(This event is part of the South FIRST FRIDAYS monthly art walk in downtown San Jose's SoFA District.)

Exhibit on view through September 25, 2009
