KALEID Gallery is pleased to present The Tradition of Decay new works by Andrew Wallace

To extract the essence of humanity is to reduce the many to one. The solitary figure, repeated throughout Andrew Wallace’s work, conveys the sense of human fallibility and the inconstant desires possessed. The permanent shadow cast from the industrial revolution transformed philosophical and social ideals still upheld today. Inspired form early 19th century prints and photographs, Wallace, seeks a period free from the current mainstream societal decay.

Using the figures in the photos and prints as a loose reference point, the men and women undergo a radical transformation to the point of becoming barely recognizable. Mirroring the current state of dystopia, the portrayed figures are in perpetual jeopardy yet capable of withstanding constant dismemberment, reorganization and reconstitution of their parts. His work strives to uncover the hidden human instinct and the wilder side of human behavior which dwells just below the surface of our everyday façade. The act of reclaiming images, transferring them transparently as to see the underlying natural wood grain reflects the complexity of man’s innate venture to push civilization and natural resources to the limit.
